A stirring British war film depicting the boat crews whose job it was to rescue downed RAF pilots. After the Normandy D-Day landings, a dangerous attempt is made to rescue the survivors of a WWII British Hudson bomber, crashed at sea. Only a fragment of their mayday alert reaches England. Among the crew is Air Commodore Waltby, who orders the crew members that if he dies, they must get his briefcase to London or throw it overboard. As the weather closes in and a freezing night descends, aircraft suspend their search, leaving the waterlogged dinghy to face the sea alone. An RAF Air Sea Rescue sea launch is deployed to search the next day, but struggles against weather, mechanical problems and a fire in the galley. Will they be rescued before the enemy spots them?
