The son of a Victorian hangman emulates his father by strangling young women. He falls in love, but can he suppress the urge to kill? Inspector Conway investigates the murders and pieces together the evidence that is left behind. Emeric Pressburger contributed to the script of this psychological crime drama with a blend of serial killer suspense and Scotland Yard procedure. Filmed in London with shots of the city from Regents Park to Chelsea Embankment; post-war London is beautifully portrayed, with gramophone shops, complete with listening booths; tea houses and a funfair on Hampstead Heath. Roland Culver is the dapper and urbane inspector on the killer’s trail; Stanley Holloway provides the comedy as Culver’s chirpy cockney sidekick and Dulcie Gray is the pretty girl who may be in danger.
