The hour-long show was only ever broadcast in Australia and, until the release of this DVD, had been unseen since 1964. During their tour of Australia & New Zealand in April 1964, Gene Pitney, Dusty Springfield, Gerry & The Pacemakers and Brian Poole & The Tremeloes recorded a special in Melbourne for Australian television.  With the exception of Gerry & The Pacemakers, all the performers sang live in front of an enthusiastic audience. The performances are vibrant and upbeat, showcasing the raw talent of these young performers.

This music special was the first of its type to be produced for Australian television. Each act performed several hits, as well as an energetic all-cast rendition of When The Saints Go Marching In, with each artist taking their turn at the microphone. Unseen since and never sold abroad, the programme remained forgotten until the surviving 16mm footage was restored. Gathering the cream of British Merseybeat acts at the height of their popularity, The Liverpool Sound captures the moment when the sound of electric guitars and drums introduced Australian television audiences to a new kind of music.
