From award winning writer Phil Redmond, this 1970s drama series made by Southern Television followed the daily lives of a Salvation Army group. Phil Redmond wrote for Doctors, Grange Hill and The Bass Player and the Blonde. He created many more, including Hollyoaks and Brookside. Other writers for Sally Ann include: Anne Valery (Angels and Emmerdale) and Tony Hoare (Hazell).
The Salvation Army hostel is run by Major Cartwright, (Gerald James), who has a strong willed and determined assistant in Lieutenant Mary Barker, (Carol Leader); and an amiable receptionist, the ex-convict Pike, played by Sam Kydd. Stephanie Cole played Mrs. Major Gibbs. Most episodes featured guest actors, including Patrick Troughton, Bill Owen and Frederick Treves.
