The Likely Lads featured two sharp young Geordie lads, Terry Collier and Bob Ferris. Cynical Terry is quick-witted and full of madcap schemes; cautious Bob is socially ambitious. Their world revolves around booze, football, girls and laughs, but there is a nagging feeling that youth is fleeting. Seven years later, Terry returns to civvy street after a long spell in the army for Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? The country has undergone a sexual revolution, Newcastle is no longer recognisable, Bob has an office job, plays badminton and is engaged to Thelma, a prim librarian. Terry and Bob return to their old haunts and habits, but life is not quite the same now that Bob is engaged. Terry is his best man and, once married, Bob becomes dedicated to home life, the nine-to-five and a new-build semi-detached house. What do he and Terry have in common now – except the past? Throughout the ups and downs of Bob’s newly-wed life and Terry’s carousing and encounters with the opposite sex, the friends enjoy fun and misadventures, reliving their youths, ‘innocent’ bachelor weekends away and getting into trouble, usually caused by Terry.
