ROSEMARY SQUIRES Must Be Catching 30 Tracks on 1 CD
A hugely popular performer, Rosemary Squires MBE, known as “The British Doris Day,” was an English jazz, big band, cabaret and concert singer and recording artist. She sang for bands led by Ted Heath, Geraldo, Cyril Stapleton and more. She also performed with the jazz bands of Max Harris and Kenny Baker and appeared in the BBC Festival of Jazz at the Royal Albert Hall with the Alan Clare band. She was a regular on the BBC Light Programme, on shows such as Melody Time and Workers’ Playtime. Rosemary also sang radio and TV jingles, including:“Now hands that do dishes can feel soft as your face, with mild green Fairy liquid…”
In 1984, Rosemary was awarded the Gold Badge of Merit by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors; in 2004 she was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her services to music and charity. In 2012, she was awarded the British Music Hall Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Rosemary Squires died on 8 August 2023, at the age of 94. Although precious little of her catalogue been reissued, this compilation presents the very best of her early recordings. Included in its entirety is My Love Is A Wanderer, an LP she cut in the U.S. in 1957, not previously issued in the U.K. Also featured are several of her 45s, which have never been on CD before, making this a genuinely indispensable package for fans of her music.
