Dermot Walsh gives a memorable performance as the mediaeval swashbuckler King Richard I in this exciting television series from The Danziger Brothers. Walsh commented: “Richard was not always all one would like to see as a man. We have concentrated on his good side.” King Richard I was a typical product of his time. A brilliant general, but a bad ruler. A sensitive poet and singer… yet bloodthirsty and fearless in battle. The series features tales of adventure and derring-do, both at home and abroad, including the Holy Land.
The series follows the king as he tries to thwart Prince John’s attempt to take power by joining forces with Richard’s enemies. This results in a series of adventures as Richard is constantly in fear for his life from the likes of Leopold of Austria, (Francis de Wolff), Philip of France, (Trader Faulkner), and the Saracen, Saladin, (Marne Maitland). Richard does have allies, including Blondel, played by actor and singer Iain Gregory. Other regular characters included Sir Gilbert (Robin Hunter), Sir Geoffrey (Alan Haywood); and Queen Berengaria (Sheila Whittingham).
Independent producers Edward J.Danziger and Harry Danziger were perhaps the most prolific British production company of the 1950s. Their features and TV series seemed formed a part of virtually every British filmgoer’s and television viewer’s experience of the period. Known for second features and contemporary crime shows such as Saber and The Cheaters they also made the highly popular Robin Hood, which they followed with Richard The Lionheart, their most expensive and ambitious series.
