OPTIONAL SUBTITLES. DVD. 1 Disc. Running time: over 82 minutes of content.
Social History. Era: 1960s. Black & White and Colour.

British film icon Michael Caine guides us on a vivid journey through 1960s London. Based on personal accounts and archive footage, Caine talks to those who were part of the ‘scene’. We hear from musicians, artists, designers, photographers and actors, accompanied by footage of Carnaby Street, The Kings Road and London scenes; Liverpool and the Cavern, mods and rockers in Brighton and the “beautiful people”.

Features: The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, David Bailey, David Hockney, Twiggy, Paul McCartney, Joan Collins, Jean Shrimpton, Sandy Shaw, Marianne Faithful, Lulu, Roger Daltrey, Vidal Sassoon, John Lennon, Penelope Tree, Joanna Lumley, Mary Quant, Barbara Hulanicki and more…

This glorious pastiche of life in the 60s showcases fashion, music, anti-war demonstrations, films, the art & design scene and social revolution. Colourful footage of young people in the new, sometimes shocking, fashions, are seen dancing, drinking and enjoying their new-found freedom. Interspersed are interviews with members of the public whose views of the new lifestyle are not always approving. As Michael Caine’s mother said: “If it’s not for sale, don’t put it in the window!” The general feeling, however, was one of freedom, love and a new energy. People marched against the bomb, danced, mingled and generally had a good time. Artists like David Hockney, designers such as Mary Quant and even hairdressers like Vidal Sassoon were finding new ways to present the world.

With music from The Kinks, The Who, The Beatles, Thunderclap Newman, The Animals, The Small Faces, Cream, The Rolling Stones and more.

This documentary is an education and insight into probably the most revolutionary and inspirational decade of the 20th Century, a joyful, colourful explosion of the era that was the 60s.

“For the first time in history the young working class stood up for ourselves and said, we’re here, this is our society and we’re not going away!”
