Hypocrisy, greed and secret passions threaten to tear apart a wealthy but dysfunctional Mississippi family in Tennessee Williams’ explosive American masterpiece set in the plantations of the Deep South. The play, produced here in its original version, portrays the larger-than-life characters of Maggie “the Cat,” her alcoholic husband, Brick, and the dominating family patriarch, Big Daddy. A hot-house of corruption and lies, the drama is played out against a backdrop of rampant 1950’s Cold War anti-communism, white domination, racial segregation and intense homophobia.

Joss Ackland CBE has appeared in more than 130 film and television roles. He was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for playing Jock Delves Broughton in White Mischief (1987). Ackland worked opposite Alec Guinness in the 1979 television serial Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy; and his career advanced through the 1980s with important parts in such films as The Sicilian, The Hunt for Red October and White Mischief. On television Ackland appeared as Jephro Rucastle with Jeremy Brett and David Burke in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. He played C. S. Lewis in the television version of Shadowlands before it was adapted into a stage play.
