At fourteen years old, Helen Shapiro was a natural live performer, blessed with a phenomenal voice. While still a teenager in the early 1960s, she was one of Britain’s most successful female singers. She took the UK by storm in 1961, topping the charts with two of her first three releases, You Don’t Know and Walkin’ Back To Happiness, both million-sellers. Success continued in 1962 with further hits including Tell Me What He Said and film appearances in Play It Cool and It’s Trad, Dad! In 1963, Shapiro toured with the Beatles, who were her supporting act. Helen quickly established herself as a major international star, and since the 1970s, has performed in musical theatre and jazz. She appeared in the West End and toured with the British jazz trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton and his band. This compilation is drawn from EPs issued in the UK, France and Sweden in 1961 and 1962, and includes tracks from a couple of dedicated EPs plus selected hits and LP cuts. Also included are French language versions of two of her hits, plus their B-sides, from a very rare French EP.
