David Tomlinson (1917–2000), is perhaps best known for his iconic role as Mr. Banks in the Disney classic Mary Poppins (1964). Tomlinson’s early life was shaped by his adventurous spirit, which extended beyond acting. During World War II, he served as a Royal Air Force pilot, surviving a crash landing and serving as a flying instructor, experiences that are a notable part of his memoir. Tomlinson quickly gained recognition in films like Miranda (1948), Here Come the Huggetts (1948),  Marry Me! (1949), The Chiltern Hundreds (1949) and So Long at the Fair (1950), with Jean Simmons and Dirk Bogarde. His career spanned more than five decades, including over fifty films, with memorable roles in The Love Bug (1968) and Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), ensuring his legacy in family entertainment. Tomlinson also found success on the stage, with long-running performances in plays such as The Little Hut, where he shared the stage with Robert Morley and Roger Moore was his understudy. Tomlinson married Audrey Freeman in 1953 and they remained together for nearly 50 years, raising four sons. Despite facing personal tragedies earlier in life, he enjoyed a fulfilling family life. This autobiography is full of humour, wit and personal reflections, with a heartfelt family tribute by his son James and afterword by acclaimed actor Miles Jupp and BAFTA winning writer James Kettle, who brought David’s life to the stage in The Life I Lead.  A charming and candid tale of stardom, family, and adventure, Luckier than Most is the story of a man whose warmth and talent continue to enchant generations.
