Produced by the Central Office of Information, these short films feature popular entertainers of the era. Olympic gold medallist David Wilkie encourages us to learn to swim, Ernie Wise and Glenda Jackson do a great double act on being blood donors and Ed ‘Stewpot’ Stewart gives precautionary advice on children and strangers. Roy Hudd is converted from littering to cleaning up, Basil Brush visits the beach and Delia Smith advises on saving energy. Many famous faces explain road safety, including Jon Pertwee, Alvin Stardust, Ken Dodd (in multiple characters), Joe Bugner, Jimmy Hill, the cast of Dad’s Army, David Prowse, (before his Darth Vadar days), pop group Mud and footballer Kevin Keegan, while Man About the House star Richard O’Sullivan displays his lack of driving ability. Softly Softly star Stratford Johns warns against drink-driving and Shaw Taylor introduces car seatbelts. Michael Palin performs a Pythonesque parody with a serious message about driving too close, while Play School favourite Derek Griffiths explains how to protect your bike. There are several of Richard Massingham’s famous public information films, Jimmy Hanley presents some short films on car travel and many much-loved cartoon characters also feature. The films portray a nostalgic view of British life from the 50s to the 80s, with charming scenes, vehicles and fashions of the era.
