Noël Coward’s sensitive portrayal of what happens when two happily married strangers meet and their acquaintance deepens into love. Thrown together by a chance meeting, they are helpless in the face of their emotions, but redeemed by their moral courage. Few films equal the compassion and realism of Brief Encounter. The film premiered in London on 13 November 1945, and was released on 25th November to widespread critical acclaim. It received three nominations at the 19th Academy Awards, for Best Director, Best Actress, (for Johnson) and Best Adapted Screenplay. The station scenes for the film were shot in Lancashire, far enough away from major cities to avoid the blackout in early 1945. Some urban scenes were shot inLondon, Denham and Beaconsfield, near Denham Studios, where the film was made.
