As King Henry VIII lies on his deathbed, he instructs his courtiers on the order of succession to the throne, firstly his son Edward VI, then Mary Tudor, then Elizabeth and finally Jane Grey. Those around him adhere to his wishes. However, when the young Kind Edward VI dies aged 15, the Duke of Somerset and the Earl of Warwick begin scheming to have their favoured candidate ascend to the throne. The film was voted the second best British movie of 1936, by readers of Film Weekly magazine. Nova Pilbeam won the magazine’s Best Acting award. Miles Malleson wrote the dialogue and director Robert Stevenson wrote the screenplay, resulting in a superbly scripted story.
